If you’re thinking about becoming a Virtual Assistant but have no clue where to begin, you’re not alone. When I first started, I didn’t have a guide, mentor, or roadmap. It was pre-COVID, and working from home wasn’t mainstream yet. I stumbled through the process—learning everything the hard way.
That’s why I created the Virtual Assistant 101 course—to give you what I wish I had back then. But if you’re still figuring out your next steps, one of the best ways to start is by partnering with a third-party company that connects VAs with clients.
Here are four platforms I recommend checking out:
1. BELAY
BELAY was my very first VA opportunity—and it completely changed the game for me.
Here’s what the process looked like:
- Submit a video answering a few questions
- First-round interview
- Skills quiz/test
- Final interview with a team member
At the time, I had admin experience as a graduation coach and church staffer, but I had zero idea what being a VA actually meant. I had to learn everything from scratch.
Now, BELAY hires you as a contractor and pairs you with clients based on your skills and personality. They also have a job board where you can apply for additional roles. I loved my experience with BELAY and highly recommend them to anyone starting out!

2. The Mom Project
The Mom Project is a more flexible platform specifically geared toward moms looking for meaningful remote work. While the application process isn’t as extensive as BELAY, I didn’t find as much success landing clients here. That said, it’s a great entry point, especially if your resume is in good shape.
Once you’re signed up, you’ll receive emails with job opportunities and have access to their job board to apply directly.

3. Fiverr
Fiverr is a freelance marketplace where you can create service listings (called “gigs”) offering everything from inbox management to social media scheduling.
How it works:
- Create a profile and publish your VA-related gigs
- Clients find and book you based on your ratings, reviews, and portfolio
- Fiverr takes a commission, but you don’t need your own website or LLC to start
It’s an easy way to test the waters and build credibility—plus you can update your offerings as you grow.
4. Upwork
Like Fiverr, Upwork is a freelancing platform, but instead of waiting for clients to find you, you can actively apply to job postings.
How it works:
- Build your profile and highlight your VA services
- Browse job listings and submit proposals
- If selected, you’ll communicate with the client through the platform and get paid through Upwork
While I haven’t personally worked on Upwork as a VA, I’ve hired freelancers here and had great experiences.
Why Third-Party Platforms Work
These platforms offer structure, client access, and credibility—without needing a website, business name, social media, or LLC. They’re a great way to get experience and build confidence as you start your VA journey.
Keep in mind: You won’t keep 100% of what you earn. These platforms take a cut of your pay, but in return, they handle marketing, contracts, and payments for you.
