(And How It Can Change Your Life Too)
In 2018, I started virtual assisting as a way to make money with a flexible schedule, allowing my husband and me to pursue our dream of touring and making music part-time. What began as a simple side hustle soon turned into a six-figure business, and I was beyond grateful for the opportunity to support my family while doing something I loved.
But in 2023, everything changed. Our son, Jayson, was born completely healthy. However, after a traumatic birth, he sustained a brain injury, and our world was turned upside down. Suddenly, our lives were filled with doctors’ appointments, therapy sessions, and a 32-day NICU stay. I found myself struggling emotionally in the postpartum period, overwhelmed by the stress of managing Jayson’s medical needs. I felt like I was failing every day.
I had planned to be a stay-at-home mom, but life had other plans. However, before I went on maternity leave, I felt a quiet nudge from God to wait before I made any big decisions about quitting my work. Looking back, I realize that was divine guidance. Returning to work as a virtual assistant after my maternity leave gave me a sense of purpose, balance, and the space I needed to take care of my son. Having that work helped me feel successful and gave me the mental break I needed in the chaos.
It was during this time that I realized how much I wanted to help other moms—especially those in similar situations—find the same flexibility, purpose, and balance through virtual assisting. I knew there had to be others out there who needed something more for themselves.
The Challenge: Feeling Like a Failure
When Jayson was born, I thought everything would go as planned. But after the traumatic birth and subsequent brain injury, my whole world changed. Between the hospital stays, medical treatments, and constant worry, I found myself questioning everything. I felt like I was failing as a mom, like I wasn’t doing enough to care for my son or help my family.
At the same time, I had always envisioned myself as a stay-at-home mom, focusing solely on raising my kids. But then, that nudge to keep working came just before maternity leave. I didn’t understand it at the time, but I now see how that decision was the key to helping me keep my mental and emotional well-being intact.
The Solution: Virtual Assisting as a Lifeline
Being a virtual assistant wasn’t just a career choice for me; it was a lifeline during a difficult season of my life. It allowed me to work from home, support my family financially, and still be present for all the medical appointments, therapies, and emotional moments with Jayson. The flexibility of virtual assisting meant I could manage my workload and still be there for him when he needed me most.
Over the years, I grew my VA business from a side gig into a full-fledged six-figure career. But it wasn’t just the financial success that mattered—it was the personal fulfillment. The work gave me a sense of accomplishment and purpose when I needed it the most. It was something just for me, a reminder that I wasn’t just a mom, but a professional making a difference in the world.
The Decision to Become a VA Coach
As I continued to grow my VA business, I realized something: I wanted to help other moms find the same balance and success that I had found. I knew there were women out there—just like me—who needed something more. Something that gave them purpose, flexibility, and the chance to contribute to their families without sacrificing everything else.
That’s when I decided to become a VA coach. I wanted to show other moms that it is possible to have both—be there for your family and still build a successful career.
